Third Year Studio

Each year group has a dedicated studio with individual student desks, Wi-Fi access, permanent digital projection systems, audio playback equipment and black boards. Each year group is encouraged to make their studio their home for the year since a significant amount of practical and theoretical lectures take place in their studios.

Fourth Year Studio

This studio is an inspirational space that is fully equipped for design and technology-related activities and is primarily used by 4th year students in the department. The space includes specialised sewing machinery, pattern construction/design tables and wall-to-wall pin boards to exhibit design work and conceptual presentations.

Workshop

The Department of Industrial Design offers a comprehensive workshop that allows students to manufacture almost any product they can imagine. Included in this workshop is a wide variety of industrial woodworking and metal working machinery, a comprehensive store of hand tools, two vacuum-forming machines, a complete welding shop, industrial spray booth and a dedicated 150m2 ceramics studio. The 890m2 workshop space and layout allows for complete student year groups to be able to work comfortably in the environment, with a full-time Workshop Technician and Assistants available for advice and assistance. Students entering the programme complete a level one first aid course and workshop training to prepare the students for the safe operation of all the workshop equipment.

Masters Studio

Master’s students have a dedicated studio space with individual computer workstations and desks. Master’s students are encouraged to take ownership of their space and utilise them to help visualise and plan the design research projects they are undertaking. Most Master’s students also participate in tutoring in the undergraduate BA ID programme.

Photo Studio

The department's photography studio enables students to document their physical work professionally. Studio equipment includes: infinity curves, spot lights, light tent, LED lights, and photography turntables. Digital cameras, tripods and video cameras can be booked from the photo studio supervisor for use on-campus.

BA Honours Studio

The BA Honours studio provides a professional studio environment with a boardroom and dedicated computer lab with individual computers and A3 digital graphics tablets. The boardroom includes a digital projection system, audio visual equipment, black boards and individual presentation/display spaces. Hons students participate in industry projects and competitions as well as cross-disciplinary collaboration within their dedicated studio. Each year the student cohort customises the space and takes ownership of the studio space in which they will spend a significant amount of time throughout the year.

Computer Lab

The Department has a fully equipped computer laboratory with 40 high spec desktop computers, high-speed internet access and the latest Computer Aided Design (CAD) and graphics software suites. In addition to the computers, the lab has two A3 scanners, a digital projection system, audio visual equipment and black boards all used for practical training of the digital CAD and graphics tools. All workstations are also linked with the UJ library network for printing.

Welcome to the Department of Industrial Design

The Department of Industrial Design is the oldest Industrial Design programme in South Africa. It began at the School of Art, Johannesburg in 1963, this became the Technikon Witwatersrand in 1979, and finally merged with Rand Afrikaans University and Vista University to become the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2005. The Department of Industrial Design is one of eight departments in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture based in a bespoke building on the UJ Bunting Road Campus
